For Armour Magazine’s Season 35, the theme TRACE explored the marks, moments, and remnants that linger in our lives. For the cover, I wanted to capture this idea through something subtle and fleeting: the trace of water left behind on a surface. The letterforms appear as though water had been spilled and evaporated, leaving behind a mark to spell TRACE.

Typographically, I drew inspiration from Ed Ruscha’s work and his treatment of type.  To make the illusion feel physical, we printed a gloss finish over a matte cover, allowing the lettering to catch the light like water.

Because the issue brought together shoots with vastly different concepts and visual languages, it was important that the cover feel chic and cohesive without representing any one story too literally. The final design relies on subtlety through material, light, and typography to be impactful.
